Abstract

Drug repurposing (or drug repositioning) is defined as the process of identifying new pharmacological indications of old, existing, investigational, or FDA-approved drugs for use in the treatment of diseases other than the drugs' original intended therapeutic use. Drug Repurposing - Advances, Scopes and Opportunities in Drug Discovery delivers up-to-date information on the identification of newer uses, molecular mechanisms, and novel targets of existing drug candidates through the application of various experimental, biophysical, and computational approaches and techniques. Chapters discuss recent advances in drug repurposing strategies that are currently being used in the discovery and development of drugs against difficult-to-treat, rare, and life-threatening diseases, including microbial infections, COVID-19, parasitic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. The book also discusses the modern experimental assays (HTS) and computational techniques including informatics and databases, molecular docking and dynamics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, virtual screening and pharmacophore modeling, proteomics and metabolomics, and network pharmacology and systems biology approaches. Some of the key features of the book are: - Presents the strategies available for the development of drugs by drug repurposing approaches through various experimental and computational techniques for the treatment of difficult-to-treat, rare, and deadly diseases - Summarizes the latest advances in the application of drug repurposing strategies, techniques, and approaches in the discovery and development of drugs - Depicts drug development approaches from existing drug candidates and/or lead molecules through modern experimental assays, biophysical tools, and computational techniques Written by a global team of experts, this book is useful for drug discovery scientists, drug developers, medicinal chemists, phytochemists, pharmacologists, clinicians, biochemists, biomedical scientists, healthcare professionals, researchers, teaching faculty, and students.

Abstract

As the world moves further into urbanization, there is a greater need for construction materials to meet society's needs. As natural resources become scarce, the use of recycled materials for construction purposes has become increasingly common. Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the utilization of recycled materials in the construction industry. This will result in substantial advantages in structure and infrastructure construction coupled with a reduction in the construction cost, as well as improving sustainability. However, significant development limitations and many relevant considerations must be addressed when using recycled materials in construction. This book introduces innovative and alternative construction materials used in civil engineering.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a rampant worldwide problem. It is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is manifest in different variants. The Delta variant compromised existing therapeutic and preventive options for this disease and is beginning to be replaced by the Omicron variant. Through pharmaceutical biotechnology, three different treatment approaches to COVID-19 have been developed: computer-aided drug design (CADD); rational drug design in the wet lab; and the advanced drug delivery system. These approaches are heavily influenced by advances in life sciences, such as the development of structural bioinformatics, the establishment of nanobiotechnology as a standard approach in drug design, and major advances in structural biology such as the development of the CryoEM method. This book will focus on providing possible solutions to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in light of these advances in life sciences.

Abstract

With the avalanche of biological sequences generated in the postgenomic age, molecular science is facing an unprecedented challenge, i.e., how to timely utilize the huge amount of data to benefit human beings. Stimulated by such a challenge, a rapid development has taken place in molecular science, particularly in the areas associated with drug development and biomedicine, both experimental and theoretical. The current thematic issue was launched with the focus on the topic of "Molecular Science for Drug Development and Biomedicine", in hopes to further stimulate more useful techniques and findings from various approaches of molecular science for drug development and biomedicine.

Abstract

Pharmaceutical formulations have evolved from simple and traditional systems to more modern and complex novel dosage forms. Formulation development is a tedious process and requires an enormous amount of effort from many different people. Developing a stable novel dosage form and further targeting it to the desired site inside the body has always been a challenge. The purpose of this book is to bring together scholarly articles that highlight recent developments and trends in pharmaceutical formulation science. Each article has been written by authors specializing in the subject area and hailing from top institutions around the world. The book has been written in a systematic and lucid style explaining all basic concepts and fundamentals in a very simple way. This book aims to serve the need of all individuals involved at any level in the pharmaceutical dosage form development. I sincerely hope that the book will be liked by inquisitive students and learned colleagues.

Abstract

Computational biology drives discovery through its use of high-throughput informatics approaches. This book provides a road map of the current drug development process and how computational biology approaches play a critical role across the entire drug discovery pipeline. Through the use of previously unpublished, real-life case studies the impact of a range of computational approaches are discussed at various phases of the pipeline. Additionally, a focus section provides innovative visualisation approaches, from both the drug discovery process as well as from other fields that utilise large datasets, recognising the increasing use of such technology. Serving the needs of early career and more experienced scientists, this up-to-date reference provides an essential introduction to the process and background of drug discovery, highlighting how computational researchers can contribute to that pipeline.
